If you want snow, good jobs, strong economy, access to wilderness where people don't care if you're gay check out Grand Rapids. It snows more there than any of the other cities listed
Ah, yes, but is it just snow you can shovel or snow you can ski and snowboard in? At 7 world-class resorts within 40 minutes of downtown?
upstate new york. adirondack mountain range state park is the largest in the country, lots of woods and forests here, tons of lakes and rivers, some of the best snowboarding and skiing endless snowmobile trails and hiking
3 hours from new york city, couple hours longer to the beach.
its not cheap but its not expensive either, a lot of new tech jobs moving in, lots of new hip type areas
I would suggest Salt Lake City it's hard to beat in terms of balance of city and the outdoors. You are 20 minutes not only from skiing but mountain biking, camping, boating, etc.

There are others that have those things, but it may be a matter of better quality/quantity/size in SLC's favor, in comparison.
You will never find a skiing utopia that isn't expensive. Vermont. Another vote for upstate NY.
Also, the major Upstate NY areas, for the most part, have some of the highest average snowfalls in the country. All of them have areas that the OP would be fine to live in as well.
