This subject has been dealt with in the rural ghetto thread , but I think it's a bit dated . So my question is which rural areas are high crime or dangerous in 2016 ?

Rural areas in Texas outside of Houston in particular have considerably high crime rates. Parts of the South and Midwest with depressed economic conditions along with high usage (and production of) of methamphetamines would be other such places.

What rural areas of the Midwest? I'm only familiar with Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan as far as going to rural areas dozens of times. Those states have extremely safe rural areas (you can include Minnesota as well, I haven't been there a ton, but I lived in Iowa for 23 years and I know Minnesota is very safe).

More southern or eastern areas of the Midwest?

I mean, there are some smaller towns in the Midwest that have higher crime. Benton Harbor, MI comes to mind. And these aren't rural by any stretch of the imagination, but there are plenty of smaller cities/metros with high crime, like Saginaw, Rockford, Flint, Gary, etc. etc.

This may be what he is referring to: DEA.gov / Methamphetamine Lab Incidents

Small towns and rural areas in the Southwest and Southeast tend to have much higher violent crime rates then smaller towns in the Northeast or Midwest.

New Mexico is really bad in its rural areas on violent crime rates. Deming has a violent crime rate of 1,065 per 100,000 people. Las Vegas, New Mexico 955 per 100,000 people. Gallup has a whopping 2,181 violent crime per 100,000 people which is higher then Detroit and St. Louis. Espanola has a violent crime of 2,605 per 100,000 people which is 5 times higher then Los Angeles. These numbers are 2014 crime statistics.

Page, Arizona a small town in Arizona has a violent crime rate of 1,014 per 100,000 pepople. South Tucson which 5,000 people a suburb of Tucson has a violent crime rate of 2,435 per 100,000 people.

Anniston, Alabama is another city of just 20,000 people that stands out with it's 2,375 violent crime rate per 100,000 pepople.

Alot of the small towns in the southwest has a massive drug epidemic thats been going on for generations. They also very high rates of alcoholism and poverty.

Small towns in the Midwest and Northeast tend to have very low rates of violent crime rates because they have high percentages of older people who are far less likely to commit crime then others. New Ulm, Minnesota for example has a violent crime of 69 per 100,000 people. Which is 97 percent lower then Gallup, New Mexico.

I'll agree that a lot of rural areas in the Southwest, and basically the entire state of Arizona, are very high crime. You can't even leave outdoor furniture on front porches in even the smallest of towns because they'll inevitably get stolen. You also often can't get shopping baskets in stores, either. Routinely stolen. I was staying in Page during a Grand Canyon trip last fall, and one of the only places in town to buy essentials is the Super Walmart. The greeter at the door laughed at me when I asked if they had shopping baskets.

I remember driving through a rural agricultural area on the way to Saguaro National Park outside of Tucson, and there were ramshackle mobile home communities all over the place with trailers that had bars on the windows. In the middle of nowhere! Major culture shock coming from the Minnesota, where some people in small towns might not even lock their doors, or even leave easy-to-steal valuables outside and in plain view from the street (which is still really stupid no matter where you live). I've even seen people in rural Minnesota leave their cars running, parked on the street, and run errands for minutes at a time. That's how safe it is.

Are there any reasons for the Southwest having high drug addiction and poverty rates ? Also how much of rural Southwestern violence cartel related ?
