I did a count for the LA Metro and found 27. There were 3 that made it very close (within 100k sq ft.), but this is what I've counted so far.

2+ million sq ft.

1. South Coast Plaza (Costa Mesa): 2.8 mil sq ft.
2. Del Amo Fashion Center (Torrance): 2.6 mil sq ft.
3. Lakewood Center (Lakewood): 2.1 mil sq ft.

TOTAL: 7.5 million sq ft.

1-2 million sq ft.

1. Westfield Topanga (Warner Center): 1.6 mil sq ft.
2. Glendale Galleria (Glendale): 1.6 mil sq ft.
3. Northridge Fashion Center (Northridge): 1.5 mil sq ft.
4. Ontario Mills Mall (Ontario): 1.5 mil sq ft.
5. Victoria Gardens (Rancho Cucamonga): 1.5 mil sq ft.
6. Los Cerritos Center (Cerritos): 1.4 mil sq ft.
7. Westfield Santa Anita (Arcadia): 1.3 mil sq ft.
8. Oaks Shopping Center (Thousand Oaks): 1.3 mil sq ft.
9. Montclair Plaza (Montclair): 1.3 mil sq ft.
10. Brea Mall (Brea): 1.2 mil sq ft.
11. Westminster Mall (Westminster): 1.2 mil sq ft.
12. Burbank Town Center (Burbank): 1.2 mil sq ft.
13. Galleria at Tyler (Riverside): 1.2 mil sq ft.
14. Irvine Spectrum (Irvine): 1.2 mil sq ft.
15. Plaza West Covina (West Covina): 1.2 mil sq ft.
16. Westfield Culver City (Los Angeles): 1.1 mil sq ft.
17. Westfield Valencia (Valencia): 1.1 mil sq ft.
18. Shops at Mission Viejo (Mission Viejo): 1.1 mil sq ft.
19. Puente Hills Mall (Industry): 1.1 mil sq ft.
20. MainPlace Mall (Santa Ana): 1.1 mil sq ft.
21. Moreno Valley Mall (Moreno Valley): 1.1 mil sq ft.
22. Bueno Park Downtown (Buena Park): 1.1 mil sq ft.
23. Antelope Valley Mall (Palmdale): 1.0 mil sq ft.
24. South Bay Pavilion (Carson): 1.0 mil sq ft.

TOTAL: 30 million sq ft.

Just because...900k-1 mil sq ft.

1. Inland Center (San Bernardino): 989k sq ft.
2. Pacific View Mall (Ventura): 970k sq ft.
3. South Bay Galleria (Redondo Beach): 955k sq ft.
4. Stone wood Center (Downey): 940k sq ft.
5. Fashion Island (Newport Beach): 909k sq ft.

TOTAL: 4.8 million sq ft.

GRAND TOTAL: 37 Million Sq Ft.

In discovering these stats, I found that San Diego and Bay Area Metro have quite a sizable number as well, but I didn't have time to do those.

Century city will be over a million after the construction.
Buena Park downtown is 1.1
South Bay galleria is 950.
La also has a bunch in the 800-950 range. 3-5 I think.
Westside Pavilion
Beverly center
Fashion Sq Sherman oaks
Baldwin Hills
Whittwood

So LA will have 27 over a million with 4 more over 950.
Also, where does citadel outlets, Montclair plaza or fashion island rank?

I think malls are more and more going to have to provide an "experience" to survive. Many of the smaller, drab, "traditional" malls are largely vacant, and will probably be torn down and redeveloped. This has already happened with a few malls in the Toronto area.

I believe the block at orange is over 900 too.
I would guess LA metro has 40-43 over 700,000 which seems crazy.

That doesn't even count
The Grove
American at brabd
Hollywood and Highland
Paseo Colorado
Santa Monica place
Sherman oaks galleria
.
In the 400-600 range but do very well

Hampton Roads, VA also has its fare share of Malls & Town Centers.

MacArthur Center (Norfolk)
Military Circle Mall (Norfolk) *dying as we speak*
Lynnhaven Mall (Viriginia Beach)
Pembroke Mall (Virginia Beach)
Virginia Beach Town Center
Greenbriar Mall (Chesapeake)
Chesapeake Square Mall
Peninsula Town Center (Hampton)
City Center at Oyster Point (Newport News)
Patrick Henry Mall (Newport News)
Williamsburg Premium Outlet mall
Simon Premium Outlet Mall Norfolk ( under construction)

That's a lot of retail for a metro area of just 1.7 million

Cleveland has 6: Ashtabula Towne Square, Richmond Town Square, Great Lakes Mall, Great Northern Mall, Southpark Mall, and Crocker Park. With 3 others over 900,000 square feet (The Shoppes at Parma, Beachwood Place, and Midway Mall)

So, what do all of you think malls will have to do to continue to thrive in the future?

So, not sure. Don't know if they're separating the retail from the other commercial uses, or not. Typically malls won't separate the uses. If you hear that a mall has x million square feet of retail space, that doesn't mean it has x square feet of, say, clothing and furniture stores, it means x square feet of all commercial uses (not like they're excluding the food court, or the gym, or the amusement facility).

I've noticed that most newer malls are either open air malls or incorporate a mixed use component such as office and residential. Either that or there are just big box stores with smaller retail stores in a plaza or "town center". I'm not too sure of anywhere in the country that Is building new malls based on the old standard. (Closed in, within a sea of surface parking, etc.).
