A lot of companies in the SF Bay Area have been hiring remote workers so they can afford to pay them a lower wage (relative to the local wages) so these people can enjoy a decent salary while living in a place with a rock bottom cost of living like Montana or Texas. They still need to fly in to HQ in SF every once in a while so living not too far from an airport might be necessary.
