southern IL and IN

Also I've heard southern/Texas accents in Nebraska, though those people could just be from Texas.

Spend more time in trailer parks, muh dude.

There are plenty of NY natives who could be mistaken for southern quite easily, especially the further west you go. Unless you really recognize nuanced affectation or are natively southern, you are likely to have a double take.

That said, are we talking furthest north native accent or furthest north in general?

Furthest north I have heard native southern accents (not counting WV style Appalachian) is along the northern banks of the Ohio river in Indiana and southwest Ohio outside of Cincy.

Counting the WV accent, in terms of native not tourist, about an hour south of Pittsburgh or so. In a small town area still in PA. In a funny sort of way, they sounded more deeply West Virginian than the folks on the WV side of the border did.

Furthest north I have just in-general heard a southern accent is Rochester, NY. I am fairly certain they were visiting.

Baltimore, I guess, since it is a southern city.

Southern NJ. I lived there for about a year after moving from NYC and was surprised people there have an accent like that.

Southern Iowa. It was just a tinge, but I more or less have a Minnesota/northern US accent, so it stands out to me,
