We have family in MA- and family in Ohio somewhere along the way would be great. Love New England- just not sure because Taxes, and utilities are so high. This might help out: We like historical architecture....I grew up in MA, and now live in NYC
-Where you are working- Will be Telecommuting
-How much you are willing to spend on housing- 150k-200kfor a multi family- Is it possible?
-How long of a commute you're willing to tolerate- Would like a walkable/bikeable neighborhood where we can walk to a bakery/cafe/restaurant and arts/culture
-If you have kids:No KIds
-What type of neighborhood environment you are looking for: SMALL city excitement with a safe downtown-(safe enough to walk home at night after dinner/live performance)
-Community amenities important to you- Good food-we are foodies-good coffee, some live music or jazz every now and then...

Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, or Columbus. Other options could be Philly, but it's probably too expensive, D.C., but expensive, or maybe somewhere in Jersey.
Can't tell you the good and bad areas though as I know nothing about these cities.
Don't know much about Scranton, but from how one of our fellow members, SWB, describes it, it seems like a great city. You should contact him for information. It seems like a cute, small city in northeastern PA. The Office is filmed there. Scranton, PA, Real Estate Listings and Scranton, PA Homes for Sale - Realtor.com
Albany, NY is a nice small city; but some areas of the downtown have crime issues. Still, lots of historic housing, events, etc. and relatively cheap for the NE area.
I have family that live in Zanesville, which is just east of Columbus. I have visited them several times and we spent many days in Columbus. I love it. It's beautiful and plenty to do. I'd be living there if my family and I was on better terms
Albany, I think it would be pretty central to both. I think the driving distance would be the same to Boston MA and Cleveland Ohio. There is some great deals on real estate there. Lots of old architecture,. You didn't mention outdoors but Albany is close to both the Catskills and the Adirondacks which are both beautiful.
