In Washington DC, most of the Smithsonian museums, the zoo and the National Gallery of Art are free.
Visits to the Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, FDR Memorial and tours of the U.S. Capitol, Supreme Court and Library of Congress also cost nothing.
Tours of the White House are a little more complicated because of security.
In Charlotte, there are free concerts in the outdoor pavilion in Southpark in the summers, various free festivals, free outdoor movie nights in some of the suburban towns, some smaller museums here that are free, etc. Most metros over 1 million have those types of things. I guess what I was looking for was unique free stuff that you wouldn't see in most places of any size, like Charlotte's airport overlook that I mentioned in my original post. Nothing fancy, but something that feels really local and that most places just don't have. But the things mentioned are nice and are good ideas if my wife and I were to ever go through those areas. Someone mentioned DC's Smithsonian Museums. With its world-class offerings AND its being free, it's truly an American treasure for sure. We love visiting there.
