Why's that? It's the major city for so much of the mountain west/midwest.
The fact that it is relatively a major city for its region does not mean it actually is easily classifiable as a major city by a national standard. To me, it is borderline.
Denver is major for the mere fact that it is the main major city in the mountain region.
It's nearing 3 million metro population. All major sports teams. Major international airport (top 3-5 US traffic)
It is still borderline to me. By 2025-2030, it will be (and not borderline). Just needs a bit more oomph IMO. Still feels somewhat smaller than it is when visiting there (feels like more of a 1.5-2M metro area to me)

My opinion isn't any more valid than yours, but I'm really quite surprised that you would classify Denver as anything other than a major city. It is unquestionably the main city of the Intermountain West, with only Salt Lake City getting anywhere even remotely close to it in importance. It's a top-20 metro in population. Its airport is one of the busiest in the entire world. It has teams in all major-league sports. It sits at the crossroads of three interstate highways. It offers rail transit. To me, it shows all the hallmarks of being a major city.

Relatively? It's the largest city by far in the region.

2025? Can you elaborate on what it needs in 3 years to be major? I assume you can't because nothing will change that significantly in 3 years. Denver feels like Salt Lake City size? I'd say it feels a bit bigger.

I can't think of a major city feature that Denver lacks. I'd say it's solidly within major city territory, thanks to its isolation.

I'm curious what NDFan lists as "major" cities and what those cities have that Denver is missing. And like the other poster, not sure much will change in 3 years for Denver to become major.
