Interesting about L.A. traffic reporting. A couple or three decades ago the reporters used the "names" of the freeways, but in the past decade they generally use only the "number". I would presume their research showed that residents could identify with a number better than a name, especially since the freeway names don't generally appear on road signs anymore. Kind of sad, as those traffic reports always sounded SO L.A.

Some of the signs at interchanges still have the freeway name on the sign, as an example, at the 57/91 interchange in Anaheim, on southbound 57, the signs for 91 say 91 west Riverside Frwy Los Angeles and 91 east Riverside Frwy Riverside...
Yes, I guess some of the older signs are still up. My main point is when you listen to traffic reports they don't use the names much anymore. I also believe this evolution brought on the "The" adjective. As in "The 5", or "The 405".
Seattle has a good number of freeways but very few of them are named. The only ones I can think of are the Valley Freeway (167) and the Boeing Freeway (526).
And we never, ever, ever put the "The" in front of the highway names like SoCal people do.

It already is happening, mostly from California ad agencies, and mark my words, this trend, like many from Cali will expand up here.
Certain roadways in the Puget Sound region were known by other names in past decades. For example, 520 was known as "The new floating bridge" throughout the 60's. I-90 was sometimes described as the "old floating bridge" during this era. I-5 was simply known as "The Freeway" during the 60's. But Seattle evolved out of those small-town descriptions in the 70's.
Thanks to all so far, interesting. Are there Metro area's with a theme also, here in Metro Detroit of course is Auto and Industrial names. Example: The Chrysler, The Ford , The Reuther, The Fisher, Detroit Industrial, and Ford Rd. to name a few. And yes we do put "The" in front of most Frwy. names.

And may I add that in SoCal, even some of the more notorious freeway interchanges are (unofficially) named:
The El Toro “Y” the southern convergence of the 5 and 405 freeways (in Orange County).
The Orange Crush in Orange County, the convergence of the 5 freeway, plus the 22 and the 57.
The "Four Level" the intersection of the 110 and 101 Freeways in Downtown L.A.
The "East L.A. Interchange" the junction of the 5, 10, 101 and 60 freeways just southeast of Downtown L.A.
The "Hollywood Split" the intersection of the 101,134 and 170 freeways in North Hollywood.

You could say that Greater LA's are themed, they are all named after cities or neighborhoods that they go through
Some native Portlanders might recall that I-5 was once known as "The Baldock Freeway". Never really took hold. I-80N, later renamed I-84, was known as "The Banfield Freeway". This one lasted quite a bit longer for some reason, but is rarely used today. US 26 was known as "The Sunset", and this one perhaps lasts more than the others today.
