I'm interested in hearing how that turns out for Baltimore. I think making Narcan widely available is a huge step in the right direction. It's really easy to administer too, anyone can do it. And it's a crazy feeling to immediately be able to reverse an overdose like that. Medicine is so cool. Unfortunately they never seem to be thankful for you saving their life though, every time I've seen or done it. I even had a guy try to attack me one time. He was like "You know how much I paid for that!?"
It's crazy how addictions can really take over peoples lives to the point where they don't give a **** that you just saved their life, the only thing they care about is the fact that you ruined their high.
Anyway, yeah, if you use Narcan on someone back away!!
Not so much that you ruined their high, but the fact they are put into immediate physical withdrawal as the Narcan gets the opiates instantly out the system. Addicts are not in a normal state of mind, but one thing that is always avoided is withdrawal or "getting sick". It is why so many continue to use and are fearful of stopping. Crazy, many addicts see the withdrawal as "worse than death" so in that moment you receive the brunt of anger/confusion.
I was very surprised and interested to learn that California scored so well. I wonder why? Is the population so huge that the percentage of deaths from drug overdoses is low over all??
And yay for my state of South Dakota! Meth use is high in NE and SD, though. Seems that meth doesn't cause immediate deaths so much as screwing people up long term.
Interesting the Dakotas and Nebraska. I think it's the strong social connections, sense of community in those states. Not a lot of people coming in those states or leaving, in general. Generations of families. Maybe that social glue that holds things together pushes the drugs out?
Nope. As I said, meth use is VERY high in this region, and so is alcohol abuse. Just because the druggies aren't dying by overdose doesn't mean they aren't doing their thing.
New Mexico actually improved in the ranking compared to the year before when it had the second-worst rate of overdose deaths in the country. New Mexico's rate decreased from 27.3 to 25.3 per 100,000 in 2015.
There was a story in the Albuquerque Journal this morning about the better showing for the state. It showed that the drop was due both to a decrease in deaths here and also an increase in deaths in other states. It said that 19 states had an increase last year, 17 of which were states east of the Mississippi River.
There was a push this past year for paramedics and police to carry Narcan (referred to as Naloxone) in New Mexico. There was also a law passed by the legislature and signed by our governor in March that allowed people to get it without a prescription.
The drugs are stronger in WV. They dry out and weaken in potency by the time they reach NE and the middle of America.
