I like Austin a lot, but it is way overhyped. I like that Austinites have a lot of pride in their town and are not afraid to boost about it, even overhype it, nothing really wrong with that.
Sacramento is the complete opposite, we are the first to not hype-up anything about our town, and we downplay our attributes. It like part of the City's and Regions personality.
But, we have evolved into more acceptance, recognition and self-pride, but I think there will always be this sort of self-deprecating nature about Sacramento. We are always asking ourselves if we really deserve this or that, are we worthy of another fantastic art museum, or another research facility in Davis, etc. We take caution regarding anything big and bold. There is this constant push to control growth which sometimes drives out business expansion.
I think Sacramento's identity is still evolving; it's organic and a slow evolution which I think we will be the better for it. Sacramento's vibe and mindset is much more like Portland than Austin.
Austitude is basically bay area attitudes in Austin. It is awful.
OP, Rafting Parties on the American River is a Sacramento Past Time, that many California don't even know about.
The American River is a very clean river that runs through the Heart of the Sacramento. It is a great recreational source for kayaking, rafting, canoeing, fishing, biking along both sides of it.

This is a great post. Sacramento is really unlike any other city. It's not really like Portland, either. Portland is kind of uppity, even if it is rather crunchy.
Sacto is more like San Jose, but way better. Prettier, lots more trees, more diverse, better art scene (in my opinion).
This thread is making me want to move back there LOL. I wish it wasn't so hot in the summer.
Many people say if you put Sacramento in some intermountain, southern, or midwestern state it would outshine many others cities and it's attributes would be more appreciated and hyped up.
Sacramento's American River Parkway and Bike Trail starts in Old Sacramento/Downtown Sac and makes its way up River about 20 miles through the Heart of Sacramento to the City of Folsom and up and around Folsom Lake.
Rafting, swimming, bridge and cliff jumping can be had along the way.
