Denver/Boulder comes to mind as does San Diego and Portland, OR. In your experience what are great cities if you like to be out of doors (sporting, camping) alot?

Chattanooga, Tennessee. You can go from downtown to mountain rivers and hanggliding in a half hour.
Anything in the Northeast is within day-trip distance of mountains and beaches. Boston is probably best of these for being closest to the greatest variety of either rocky or sandy coastlines, mountains that are big by eastern standards, lakes, smaller mountains, and whitewater rivers, but any city in the Northeast will put you in reasonable proximity to a solid variety of outdoor activities.
Charlotte and Atlanta for being near the outdoors in the mountains, and being close enough to the beach to spend weekends there.
Any Florida city for water recreation.
St. Louis, KC, Tulsa for hiking in mountain scenery.
Twin Cities for woods and lakes recreation. Detroit too for that matter. It may be having its problems, but if you rate it strictly on its proximity to outdoor recreation, it's pretty good.
