Depends on the suburb. Some function as neighborhoods of the primary city (e.g., Cambridge and Brookline in the Boston area) and in that case, yes. And some places may technically be suburbs but are really satellite cities and if they are big enough--like Newark and Jersey City--a person could be considered a "big city person" living in cities like those.
If you work or spend time in the big city then yea. Being a big city guy is relative, though. In Miami, where I grew up.. I was a "suburban guy" cuz I lived in Coral Gables. However, in the small Texas town I used to live in, I was a "big city guy" cuz I came from the Miami area, didn't matter that it was a suburb.
Someone who equates themselves for example as a "New Yorker" or says Boston is there "home town". To answer the OP if you stated either city just mentioned to self identify and commute home to Montclair NJ or Waltham MA respectively you are not a "big city guy".

I live with my family in an inner suburb (of DC) for practical economic reasons. However, I really enjoy the vibrancy of various cities and spend as much time in them as I can.
So, I think it's a matter of mindset to an extent.

I think you have a better claim of being a "big city guy" if you live in Hoboken than if you live in any sun belt city.
