Asheville, NC (in Western NC) is one of the most liberal smaller cities in the Southeast. It's a beautiful area (mountains) and the climate sounds like a good fit for you.

OP: Taos, Boulder and Asheville aren't even close to your price range.

You might get a quarter acre in Asheville for 90K but it won't have a house on it!

As you read through city-data you will find posters who are so prejudiced against religious people they will pay a premium to minimize contact. It's the same dynamic as people who pay a premium to live in suburbs where they are less likely to encounter minorities.

But if you are in a position to pull an extra 200K out of your trust fund if need be - Asheville is a great city in a beautiful location - go for it!
