That doesn't surprise me. But it does surprise me that there's still dive bars in Manhattan.
There are a lot of bars that are blatantly divey in the East Village and Lower East Side. However they tend to not be super cheap but more like standard drink prices (4 dollars for a Budweiser, 6-8 for a mixed drink, etc.).

That's hard to believe! I heard that beers were closer to $7-10.

Are those real dives or hipster faux-dives though? I'm not trying to sound like some dive bar snob (a contradictory term, for sure), but there's definitely a difference. A lot of the places I saw in the LES and East Village seemed more like the fake hipster dives, although admittedly I don't know the neighborhoods that well, so I may have just missed all of the legitimate dives in those areas.
Another facet of the "Beard-Bro" effect which beyond requiring lots of craft beers (and PBR to "keep it real") along with the requisite burger with a fried egg on it and/or fries with gravy kind of menu. It's happening everywhere...
You mean Frites. Oh, and don't for get the odd shaped white plates. What I wouldn't give for an actual round plate.
I think drinking purely to get drunk is becoming less common. Dive bars aren't great IMO. But neither are these over priced hipster places. We need to find a happy medium.

Good beers at these places tend to be 6-7 dollars and stuff like Budweiser 4 dollars. And of course the 3 dollar PBRs.
I've never paid more than 8 dollars for any beer even at non-dives, excluding music venues/stadiums which always have massively inflated prices.

I mean, the ones I frequent seem to be real but they're still not that cheap (which is understandable because Manhattan rents are a bajillion dollars). I suspect that a dive bar in the Midwest would have great drink specials. Although even in New York some of these places have good beer and shot specials.
Well actually, the vibe of one of the ones I'm thinking of is a little too forced, but I wouldn't say it's a "fake hipster dive" haha.
However most of the ones I go too seem all around genuine.
The best dive bar I've been to so far in NYC is in Williamsburg actually, it's a fun place and they have great beer prices.
