And housing costs are more expensive than many other places. Add that all together, and a low-wage Texas teacher's pension isn't going to cut it in Vermont for many people.

I think there's a deduction on property taxes if your incomes is below a level, high enough most of the middle-class qualifies. from the link:

Eligible Vermont residents can make a claim for a rebate of their school and municipal property taxes if their household income does not exceed a certain level. Generally, household incomes of $99,000 or more do not receive an adjustment. The maximum property tax adjustment is $8,000.

Compared to the Northeast not New Hampshire, Vermont is typical for its region. But yea, compared to the south or Texas, it's high.

The Maple Sugar candies we used to get there. I lived in Bennington for a year and liked it--in the late 70's.

Hmm...

Socialist politicians who own 3 homes and preach redistribution

Homogenous populations of white people who want open borders in the southern states (because the problems associated with that will never be felt by them)

Prohibitive expenses and anti-business policies

A contempt for capitalism, by people who have benefitted from it immensely

Beautiful fauna

Great place to live if it weren't for the ridiculous politics and incredibly silly people.

The whole no billboards thing, which might not even be true.
And the movie 'Funny farm' comes to mind, which might not have even been set in Vermont, I can't remember.
