Given you have family in Indiana and you're looking for something not scorching hot for several months Indianapolis could be your wildcard, and it certainly doesn't have the extreme long winters either with four distinct seasons. New Hampshire, low humidity in the summer. Sure, the winters are a little longer but I find having a winter hobby skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, snowmobiling etc..gives you something to look forward too instead of dreading winter. It is picked one of the best states to live in every year.
