Washington and Oregon have California beat in terms of cost of living, weather, and natural scenery.
When I lived in California I would take trips up to Oregon and Washington and was amazed at the scenery ..the lush green mountains.. cool mist .. fresh air ..cleanliness, was just beautiful . It was kinda depressing when I got back to So Cal ..
California is waay more mismanaged than Oklahoma or Kansas (just because a state is super conservative doesn't mean it's mismanaged. California has the 2nd highest unemployment level in the country, a HORRIBLE COL/Wage ratio (basically Mississippi wages with New York COL in some areas) and ridiculous illegal immigration issues. Not to say it isn't a beautiful state with great culture and people, but it definitely is not a well run state.
You made up the part about unemployment. California has a lower unemployment rate than Texas, Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Arizona among others.
Heres the biggest reason why Southern CA isnt great. They have no fresh water. No lakes. No rivers. If youre a fish like me, no fresh water is a no go.

Good point. I think California is among the most beautiful, but best......too subjective. There can be no "best" state.
California could be one of the best states. It has it all. Great climate, scenery, the shoreline, agriculture, etc. Unfortunately, it has been ruined by the liberal/progressives, and turned into a socialist hell hole. I will never live there again.

There are some artificial lakes for recreation like boating/fishing, but you are right for the most part. Anyone who grew up in the Midwest, south or east coasts going to rivers and lakes for all sorts of activities would definitely notice the lack of freshwater activities.
In SoCal, when we want to swim, we head to the pool or the Pacific.
