Not too surprising when you consider much of the state looks like Nebraska and South Dakota. Most of its woods are in the western part where Yellowstone is.
Now picture the stylized mountains and forests depicted in Hollywood movies and cartoons? Think 'Open Season' and 'Bambi' and old Disney cartoons. Where are you now?
First thing that comes to mind is not states, I think Germany, Hungary, Romania, etc.
But if it has to be states then I think the northeast and upper midwest types of forest, definitely not the pine forest though. Pine forest don't have the sort of thick tangled undergrowth I associate with old movies and cartoons.
This topic made me curious, so googled and came up with a fun bit of trivia that the forest in the Bambi movie was based on photos of Maine. http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/Forest_(Bambi)
National forests occupy nearly 40% of Idaho's land mass, more than any other state. Of the 20.2 million acres of national forests in the state, over 4 million acres have been designated by Congress as wilderness and reserves from timber harvest. Another 8.4 million acres are currently without roads.
