First thing that comes to mind is not states, I think Germany, Hungary, Romania, etc.
But if it has to be states then I think the northeast and upper midwest types of forest, definitely not the pine forest though. Pine forest don't have the sort of thick tangled undergrowth I associate with old movies and cartoons.

This topic made me curious, so googled and came up with a fun bit of trivia that the forest in the Bambi movie was based on photos of Maine. http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/Forest_(Bambi)

National forests occupy nearly 40% of Idaho's land mass, more than any other state. Of the 20.2 million acres of national forests in the state, over 4 million acres have been designated by Congress as wilderness and reserves from timber harvest. Another 8.4 million acres are currently without roads.
