Boston and the close-in burbs are pretty easy to live in without a car, unless you like to escape the city on weekends. Wanna go to the Cape beaches? Good luck with that, without driving. If it is not a frequent desire, you could rent a car on those occasions. A coworker did exactly that, suited her and the BF just fine. I, OTOH, was almost always leaving for VT or western MA or the Southcoast beaches and back roads.
Not so easy being carless in Denver. It's not impossible, depending exactly where you live, but you will probably chafe at not being able to get out to the mountains or even some of the small towns at the edge of the metro area. Doing without a car in the Denver area would downright suck. Now, owning a car there but only driving it on weekends--taking public transit or cycling or walking to work--that would be a nice setup.
Portland? Hey, maybe also the best city for no job. One can really simplify there...
And no shame.
