the western part of SC, called the Upstate. Greenville SC is the largest city. Near the Blue Ridge mountains, 3 pristine lakes, numerous waterfalls, and the whitewater Chattooga river.

The smaller Anderson and Seneca areas are closer to the lakes than Greenville, and home costs and property taxes are lower.

Charleston and its beaches are 3.5 - 4 hours away.

Eastern Washington. Western Washington is nice as well, but it's very expensive, the political climate is not what you are looking for, and grey skies from November to May isn't for everyone. Some years I swear it isn't even for me.
