I am Salamantra. I live in Seattle, got 170K to buy house, will get 50K of mortgage as well. Or not. Will be moving soon to SouthEast USA, tired of rain and prices. Will be buying a home. Which of these cities would you recommend: Atlanta, Charlotte, Raleigh. Got family, small kids, so schools are our priority.
Also, will be looking for job, I am a web developer with LAMP, MEAN, some AWS, etc. Which city has more jobs in tech?

The 170K price point isn't going to get you into any areas with good schools in the cities you mentioned and would highly recommend getting that extra 50K toward a better house/neighborhood.

Kyle speaks the truth. Your housing budget isn't realistic for the type of neighborhoods you seek. You need to up it some, or settle for bad neighborhoods/schools or insane commutes to the fringes that would eat up any cost savings.
Well idk about Charlotte or Atlanta but I think they lean more toward finance and such, have some random corporate headquarters etc. Atlanta has the HQ for Home Depot, Coca-Cola, UPS, Delta, etc so of course all those will need web developers. Charlotte has the HQ for Bank of America and a huge Wells Fargo presence, I'm sure they need web developers as well. In Raleigh some major tech companies (but not HQ) i can think of are IBM, Cisco, NetApp, RedHat, SAS, Lenovo, Quintiles etc.
You can find that type of work relatively easy in any 3 of those cities IMO. Entry, mid and senior level. I guess what it comes down to is what kind of city are you looking for and what type of company would you want? I'm sure you know Atlanta is the biggest metro by far on that list, with nearly 5.5 million people. Charlotte is in the middle with 2.4 million and Raleigh 2 million. Obviously, traffic in Atlanta is not good; that would be a major consideration for me personally. They are all growing rapidly. Pretty similar COL's actually. Which as others said wouldn't get you too much in the way of a single family house.
Why would you move to the Southeast to avoid rain? The three target cities have a higher annual rainfall than Seattle does, which influences the lush green landscape of this region. Admittedly there is more sunshine and warmer temperatures as well, but this isn't the place to go if you want a dry climate.
I always hear about Raleigh when it comes to tech jobs. A friend of mine recently moved there for a job with IBM and bought a house for 320k. So your 170k budget for a family is a bit low unless you live way outside the "city".

A quick search of the word "IT" on Indeed.com shows that there are over 12,000 IT jobs in Atlanta, over 5,000 in Raleigh and over 6,000 in Charlotte. Atlanta is the biggest city out of the three so it will naturally have the most available jobs in IT.
