The Gulf is to America what the Mediterranean is to Europe.
Maybe in Florida and California .... but certainly not the Texas Gulf Coast that much of even close. No French Riviera aspects in scope or again .... close in its Grandeur and Italy, Spain and Grecian coast and islands .....
I do agree the "Gulf Coast is a REAL Ocean Coast. I also see the Great Lakes substantial enough to be as inland seas. Their size is clearly Grand enough with clearly shores that have attributes of a ocean too.
Second, the South Texas coast is actually very nice.
No straw man .... nice is true especially by you in its western most Gulf region. But to claim it's as the US version of the Mediterranean coast of Grandeur.... there its not even close in Texas. Florida offers the white sand and blue waters we love to see and California for scope and variety of scenes.
The Great Lakes coast is quite nice too one could say. But no comparing it to the Mediterranean Coast. Even New England Maritimes are very nice and many areas of our Atlantic coast with many resort areas filled in summer thru late fall the further south you go.
But to claim it's as the US version of the Mediterranean coast of Grandeur.... there its not even close in Texas.
GunionPowder's point had nothing to do with aesthetics. It was simply about the relation of the Gulf and the Med to their respective continents. Both are nearly enclosed, low energy ocean basins "between the coasts."

It's either its own coast or an arm of the East Coast. It's the Great Lakes that are arguable because they're fresh water, but look up "Chicago beaches" on Google Images.
Having swam in three of the five Great Lakes, I would say that they are well below the tier of this discussion/comparison. Just my perspective.
Absolutely your perspective. I rather like not having to worry about an increase in shark attacks, hurricanes, and so on. I love the oceans, but there is a positive to the Great Lakes, as well.
