If you don’t mind a suburb of a major city, Ferndale and perhaps adjacent Royal Oak outside of Detroit would work. Pleasant Ridge is also adjacent.

In going to suggest Salt Lake City. Seriously. It has a sizable LGBT community, a lesbian mayor who is married to her partner, and is consistently ranked very high as gay-friendly. That would be an easy fact for you to confirm with just a minimal amount of research. Plus, it's got all the outdoor amenities you're looking for, and a good job market.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I'm going to take a few vacation days next month to check out Atlanta and Denver.
