Well, Port Townsend would meet the 2-hrs-from-major-city part.

The problem is that it does not feel like it is far from a big city despite sitting in a mostly-rural peninsula, with so many ex-Seattlites and ex-San Franciscans there. If OP doesn’t mind being constantly pressured to conform to really, really liberal views or even likes that kind of closedmindedness, it might fit. The COL, however, could be a major deterrent. Asheville should be a definite contender and would add Burlington VT and Bloomington IN.

Agreed. I think in order for an area to be "super-liberal," tuning from 88 to 92 MHz on the FM band needs to reveal more "hemp will save us from plutocracy" or "here's the latest track from local punk-fusion favorites The Nosepickers" than "you will BURN IN HELL!!!" and SC doesn't pass that test.

Corvallis, Oregon is a nice little artsy college town. Great downtown for 60k population. Surrounded by lot's of natural beauty and farms, but also right off the highway and 1.5 hours from Portland.
