Let's say you lived in a few different large cities. Assuming all things equal like job and friends, how much of a difference in happiness can living in a different city make for you?

The reason I ask is because I moved from Chicago to Philadelphia, and I was sooo much happier in philly. I'm not sure if it was actually because of the city, or other factors. I had roommate I liked after I moved, but I can't think of much else that was different.

I think it depends. I need larger cities with some culture. Deep south doesn't work either.

Finding a city or town "vibe" that suits your own is complex. Once found, its a precious thing to cherish.

I really enjoyed living in Oakland CA for its easy access to vast reaches of preserved parkland. The East Bay Regional Park District rocks!

Plus, Oakland had amazing culture, vibrant art and music, and a whole world of ethnic eateries -- great food without huge price tags.

I am trying to take control of my own happiness right now. I applied to several jobs out of state. I was turned down for several jobs and waiting on responses. A change in geography would help me alot. However, I won't move anywhere without a job/place to stay lined up.

I've done this before. It is incredibly difficult, but it happened for me twice (out of 1000 attempts). Good luck.

I've tried smaller cities twice (80k and 150k), twenty years apart, and it failed both times. I'm too much of a big city kid I guess. So a big city with life and interest, along with access to scenic rural areas too, equals complete happiness for me.

Well, if we only go by your parameters, then a different city can't make much of a difference.

If you love your job and you have great friends, what else is left?

Or really, what else is left that really matters?

Let's say you have way better weather in City A vs. City B. Okay, with everything else the same, better weather would in theory make you happier. That's a no-brainer.

What else is left?

This just seems like a really silly question. You're basically saying "Hey, I love my city, I have great friends and I love my job, so why should I move?"

You'd really have to tell us. Why SHOULD you move?

I'm very particular with the city I live in (lived in 5 cities)- I'm a BIG city person so currently in nyc and loving it. Much much happier. When I lived in smaller cities.. it didn't feel right.

What would be your limit in terms of population?
