Albuquerque station is downtown in the Alvarado transportation complex. There are connections from there to all parts of the city by bus and many busses have bike racks. You can rent a bike at several places in the city. Walking downtown can quickly become a classic pub crawl thanks to the dozens of craft breweries and tap rooms in town. There are plenty of hotels and restaurants downtown. The architecture downtown is a bit quirky (as in Albuquirky) and reflects the city’s growth — there are guided weekend walking tours. Old Town, the old Spanish colonial plaza area is not downtown but is reachable as is the Biopark but maybe not on foot. The Biopark is an aquarium, botanical garden, zoo, and river beach area. The ridiculously inexpensive commuter RailRunner train can get you from the Amtrak station to Santa Fe at the depot stop (maybe 1.5 hour ride) where there are free shuttle busses that will take you anywhere in the city of Santa Fe. Check the schedule. Depending on your hotel services they might have a shuttle bus that will get you to other places in town. I suspect that the Breaking Bad tour vehicle would pick you up at your hotel if you were interested.

You misread my first sentence. The station itself is very nice.

The neighborhood has a fair amount of new and nice things. But it also has a ton of homeless and well over its share of vacant lots and underused buildings. Hopefully the new construction will continue to improve that dynamic, which has been a gradual process for decades but is probably speeding up right now.

Richmond is one of only a handful of cites that has two Amtrak stations. Staples Mill is the busier of the two, but its location in suburban Henrico County five miles from downtown offers nothing of interest within walking distance. Of far greater interest is Main Street Station in the heart of downtown, within easy walking distance of the Shockoe entertainment/restaurant district. Also nearby are several museums, Civil War sites, Edgar Allan Poe Museum, and Jefferson's magnificent state capitol building (the guided tours of this historic landmark are not to be missed).

If you are interested in the design and architecture of old train stations, then Richmond's Main Street Station is a great way to arrive in the city. Built in 1901 in the Renaissance Revival style, this magnificent structure is a designated National Historic Landmark.
