The article could tacitly be referring to the DC area which unofficially seems to be the frontrunner. That would make more sense especially since Atlanta really isn't an "East coast" city and local media typically doesn't refer to it as such.

There is no one "official definition" for east coast.

Some define it as all states that border the Atlantic (which would include the entire state of Georgia) and some define it as all areas within the Eastern Time Zone.

Regardless, as there's no way to know if that wording came directly from Amazon, it would be best to take it with a grain of salt.

That second definition is extremely liberal and doesn't represent the way the term is most often used in the media. The first definition has more merit but that characteristic isn't automatically applied to all places within those states. And as I stated, local media typically doesn't refer to Atlanta as an "East Coast" city which is the more significant point.

I seriously, seriously doubt that wording came from Amazon as half of the finalist cities clearly aren't East Coast cities by ANY definition.

It didn't. The only absolutes in the RFP is that a candidate be a North American City with a metro population > 1,000,000.

It's an interesting discussion which has, over the years, been beaten to death here on C-D.

There are those who are very strict when it comes to the term East Coast, where it literally means "on the coast", so according to those people the only true "East Coast" mega cities are Boston, New York and Miami.

Then you have another group who includes, Philly, Baltimore, DC, Richmond, Raleigh, Charlotte, etc. as East Coast cities. With regards to Atlanta, in the general sense, when comparing it to say, Dallas or Denver or Kansas City, it would an East Coast city, when comparing it to DC or Baltimore or Philly, probably not.

It's funny, I lived in Arizona, twice, for a total of 7 years, and there were some people out there who considered Arizona as West Coast, and it doesn't even have a coastline! I would consider Arizona the Intermountain West or Mountain West.

More popularly, I'd say "East Coast" tends to refer to the Bos-Wash corridor and environs. When you include DC, Baltimore, Wilmington, Philly, etc. it's clear that the major NEC cities all have some sort of direct connection to the Atlantic by way of rivers, bays, etc.

Funny...I consider Arizona to be the Southwest first and foremost.

I tend to agree. I have to look back at my post history, but maybe earlier this year or late last year, they was a poster who was adamant that Philly, DC and Baltimore, were NOT East Coast, because they were not literally on the coast. Having grown up in NEPA (Northeastern PA) I just had to roll my eyes at that one!

Yeah, I would also say Arizona is the Desert Southwest along with New Mexico, but for me the Desert Southwest is a subgroup of the Intermountain West or Mountain West.

True but the Southwest designation has more cachet than "Mountain West" (which I associate more with Colorado).

By this definition, Philly would not be on the east coast but Atlanta would. Makes no sense. I guess Philly would be considered a Great Lakes city since PA borders the Great Lakes ?

I notice that Amazon listed several factors they would be looking at including: proximity to densely populated city centers, access to a strong labor force that could eventually fill 50,000 jobs and a strong quality of life.

Proximity to densely populated city centers and strong quality of life would rule out Atlanta.
