California, Virginia and Maryland.

Decent amount of roads - all 3 have plentiful road systems
At least one major city - LA, SF and SD in California, Richmond, VA Beach, and DC nearby in VA, and Baltimore and nearby DC in Maryland
Mountains/valleys or large hilly regions - All 3 have mountains/hilly areas
Coastline and beaches -All 3 of coastlines
diverse flora/fauna and geography
Lakes and rivers
Mild climate - Although VA and MD can get humid in the summer they have a relatively mild climate compared to other states on the East Coast such as New England states/FL
Some sort of historical significance -Obviously all 3 are chock full of historical significance as well.

Mountains/valleys or large hilly regions - Northwest Jersey
Coastline and beaches - Jersey Shore, which is huge and gorgeous
diverse flora/fauna and geography - Mountains/Beaches/Light Hills/Flat Areas/Pine Barrens/Oak forests/More Evergreens in areas
Lakes and rivers - Passaic/Delaware/Hudson/Lake Hopatcong and many other smaller ones
Mild climate - eh....not really but it's not too bad
Some sort of historical significance - tons of history/great architecture
Of course, neither of these are actually IN New Jersey!

True. But Newark and Jersey City may be major enough for the OP. The Newark metropolitan division has 2M+ people.

I would say Virginia. VA has TONS of history. You have DC metro for your city area, mountains and then a small coastal area.

I would say Texas. I can't believe some people answered Maryland in New Jersey. Current temp in Baltimore is 33, in Newark, 28. Most people wouldn't consider that "mild".

Haha, so funny! But they really are. New Jersey is a key part of the metro areas, and people go into their respective city quite often (just as often as people from suburbs within the state, if not more).

Texas isn't necessarily mild either, have you seen summer temperatures/the recent hurricane? Compared to most states, MD is fairly mild, and this winter in NJ hasn't been AWFUL. It's not Upper Peninsula Michigan lol.
