I actually thought about the railroad and flagler too. But again, like everything else I've come up with, it would be Miami not Miami Beach. Why is the city of Miami Beach so specific?? Makes me think it's a city thing...

So it has to do with sinking, water levels and/or land reclamation.

I think this is it. San Francisco does have areas reclaimed from swampy bay land... notably the airport. Build it.... Bogged down... gotta be it.

No takers on this one?

That's it! All of the cities I listed have significant areas built on fill.
The Marina District, Fisherman's Wharf and the Embarcadero were as well.

Largest cities that don't have a significant river or body of water?

oh, wow. that's cool. I didn't think "fill" when you said "bogged" so that's why SF didn't come to mind. If you're standing in front of Navy Pier or in front of Pier 39, you are definitely standing on fill.

So the question remains: was the poster who wrote that the four cities all had GOP conventions? If so, I would actually give him full credit for answering the question.

Didn't realize this til reading an article last year about their heavy winter storms and flooding, but Boston could be on your list as well.
