IonQ, based on Maryland, will open a quantum-computing R&D center and initial manufacturing plant in Bothell, WA, outside Seattle. They plan to invest a billion dollars in the next decade and employ "thousands," starting with an initial 65,000 sf.

(Out-of-town companies often put engineering centers here but don't open many manufacturing plants, except in some specialized tech/aerospace fields and when proximity to supplies or end-users is important. So this is a nice get.)

This was what I said about it in the Austin forum:

“I originally thought the headquarters was going to move to Nashville. They committed a lot more to Nashville than they did to Austin. So when the announcement to Austin was made, I wasn’t surprised but it wasn’t my first guess.

The tech landscape in Austin has been getting very competitive lately and it’s becoming increasingly harder for tech companies to get to capacity in Austin. Nashville is no where near as competitive as Austin, so they’re definitely able to do more there. I think they made the right call to grow in Nashville instead of Austin. And the fact that Oracle has been making a big healthcare push also makes sense for Nashville to be their home base.

Anyway, Oracle and Tesla were both specifically moves for tax breaks. Tesla is in a plant. And Oracle had little growth from their move. Their Austin office has been there for years. This is the case for most of these companies that have moved their headquarters to Texas.”

Ha! Supposedly Austin and Nashville share the distinction of “U.S. HQ” but Nashville will be the “World HQ.”

Don’t bother trying to rationalize it. Those tech guys are nutcases!
