The South identify with its region more than anywhere else, people from the NorthEast just say what city from "I'm a New Yorker" or "I'm a Bostonian" versus just saying I'm a Northeasterner, people from the Midwest just say what state thier from before there reigon. People from the south just say I'm a southerner while other regions identify with the local culture versus their region of the country.
I have NEVER heard anyone identify with themselves by saying "I'm a Southerner" or "I'm from the South". They will say just the city, not the demonym. Why make up stuff especially generalizing 100 million people?

Every person I met in nyc that’s from the south introduced themselves by saying “I’m from the south” except for people from Texas and Atlanta and Atlanta specifically!

Maybe it’s because they are visiting nyc idk but the Texans seemed to be the only ones that flat out said they were from Texas, Dallas, Houston, Austin etc!

You couldn't be more wrong. The South is a HUGE region and just saying "I'm a Southerner" really says nothing about where a person is actually from.

Now I've said on more than one occasion something along the lines of "It would be hard for me to get used to living in NYC as a Southerner" but when asked where I'm actually from, I say SC. I don't think the vast majority of Southerners in NYC, either visitors or transplants, would simply say "the South" when asked where they are from.
