In my experience it happens when yuppie sorts start moving into neck territory by high volume. Tends to peeve the natives.
I think that's why it happens in NY. The urbanesque and high snoot sort here tend to think the state is people who all think just like them. Ironically, the liberals tend to initiate the confrontation by raising a big local stink about something.
What do rednecks and yuppies have in common? They're both extreme groups that need to take out their frustration on an island and be done with each other.
What reality show are you watching. The blue collar people and "yuppies" in Nashville get along fine. Mutual respect is the key to a happy life. Maybe if you are a Doctor or lawyer and your daughter wanted to marry a hillbilly it could cause some issues but never heard of such a case.

Suburbanites and rednecks overlap in many of the Baton Rouge suburbs (and some of the New Orleans ones) but the true yuppies stay well inside the city. I suspect maybe if like someone else pointed out a working class white culture in a big city is considered redneck by yuppies, then there's probably conflict in South Boston as the area gentrifies, same with parts of Pittsburgh.
