That's an odd comment. It's not as if there isn't decent air travel in/out of Kansas City or where one would feel the need to exit a metro area of over 2 million in population regularly.

Anyone who can't find something to do to keep them occupied in a city of nearly 400K isn't trying hard enough.
A lot of people who say places are boring are the types who need constant entertainment. Something nobody should expect in any size city.

Personally, I love Indianapolis and a friend of mine liked living in Ft. Wayne.
If KC is in the middle of nowhere I'd hate to know how she feels about North Dakota.

The most important factors for me when choosing a place to live are low housing costs, low overall cost of living, and low taxes. Which one of these places would you recommend the most? Which one would you recommend the least?
Be careful with Missouri. On paper the tax burden is low for the state, but individual municipalities are allowed to jack up sales taxes. For example, in the taxing district where I lived, sales tax was, I believe, at or near 11%. Also there is a personal property tax on vehicles (in addition to registration fees) and KC and STL have a 1% city earnings tax if you live or work in the city. KC also taxes groceries.

Wichita is not in the same league as the other, except probably for Fort Wayne. Of this list, I'd probably like KC, then Indy, then St. Louis.

Unsurprisingly, I vote for Kansas City.

I recently moved to Indy and have really enjoyed it so far. The city/downtown is a good size without being overwhelming. There's many neighborhoods to choose from whether you prefer more urban or more suburban. There's plenty to do when it comes to music, theatre, restaurants, cultural stuff, etc. I rent currently, but it seems like the housing market is pretty good. I have the best paying job I've ever had in my life. As far as taxes go, I feel them a bit but I came from a state with no state income tax so its something for me to get used to.

Overall, I'm super happy with my choice to move here. I don't have opinions on the other places as I've never lived in any others on your list, but just thought I'd give my two cents.

I am biased towards St. Louis...but the differences in my top 3 are not great...I would live well in any of them. I'd pick St. Louis, Indy, then KC (and only because KC is farthest away from both families did I put it 3rd for me). I would not live in Wichita or Fort Wayne. They are just too small for my needs. If living in a bigger city with it's amenities is not high on your priority list, those 2 are probably the best for COL. But StL, KC, and Indy are all very reasonable for COL, especially for larger metros.

Never been to Indiana. The other 3 cities are more similar then different. I personally would go KC, StLl, and then Wichita. I lived in Wichita for 2 years and it’s fine, but it’s not on the same level as KC or St Louis.
