Hey, Austin is cheaper than Raleigh. Kind of surprised at that.
It depends on the measurement and the weight placed on various cost of living factors. In 2 of the 3 assessments I quoted, Austin is ranked with a higher COL than Raleigh. In the 3rd, Raleigh is ranked as more expensive than Austin, though the difference between the two is not great. While there are slight differences in COL between Austin and Raleigh, both are found to be significantly less expensive than Philadelphia, regardless to the measurement tool. In fact, I haven’t found any reference tool that suggests otherwise. That’s what triggered me to pull all this data together to refute the claims in an earlier post regarding Philadelphia’s relative affordability.

And "relative" is the key word. When I talk about Philly being affordable, I always try to specify that I'm talking about in comparison to our largest classically urban cities.
