Jeez, look this up and educate yourself. I used to live in Northern MN, and it got even colder than that several times each and every winter.

But regarding the thread title - I did move for retirement to a place I had visited frequently for vacation. It is absolutely beautiful.

It turned out to be a poor choice for retirement. There was very little to do, it was a 45 minute drive to the closest grocery store, and most of the residents were "summer" people. People who don't live in a place year round don't behave in the same way as they do in their own homes. There were constant drunken parties and drivers 5 months out of the year, then empty houses and little social interaction the rest of the year.

So for retirement, anyway, it's best to look also at more practical considerations. I live in a pretty place now with tons of stuff to do and really nice people - but it's not scenic in the same way my first choice was.

I look at the scenery moves kind of like this.

If you're working a standard 8-5 type of job, it's difficult to "get out" during the week. I've been working at my current office, which is within fifteen minutes of a national forest and in a pretty area itself, for about six weeks now. I've been truly out in the woods after work probably just three or four times. I have a girlfriend, but no children. It's rained virtually all week here. Hiking really isn't a go in weather like this. Also, during the winter, it's really too dark to do that much after work for about three months a year.

That leaves weekends and an occasional weekday evening for me, and that's after I cram everything else personally in. I might get two or three good full-on "outside days" a month.

I guess I don't understand wind chill. If someone says "-30 degrees F" windchill, does that mean the human being feels -30 degrees F or does that mean we subtract 30 degrees F from the current temperature?

Dallas weather would wear me out bro. The summer in Dallas would be a nightmare. Nashville is bad but we have a pretty equal 4 seasons.

That was a big part of our move. We came up for a vacation, and started planning our move when we returned. We have been here 25 years now, not planning to go back except to visit.
There were several other reasons too, but the natural beauty here on the Eastside definitely clinched it.
