Since I like my cities medium sized & near the mountains I'll nominate Chattanooga, Greenville, Knoxville, Johnson City and Roanoke. I left out Asheville because it's a little too full of itself, though it is a great place to visit.

I'll also nominate Charleston SC even though it is nowhere near any mountain, just because it is an extremely wonderful city and about as southern as it gets. I was going to say a cool city but it's not cool in the summertime.

New Orleans--for its food
Charleston, SC--I haven't yet found a city that is more "southern"
Savannah, GA--has a sort of quirky charm that's kind of hard to define
St. Augustine, FL--something about the town's architecture appeals to me
Roanoke, VA--for the mountains and outdoor activities nearby

I guess Nashville is my favorite larger Southern city, even though I don't care for modern country music.

No argument here I was using a figure of speech. I am so misunderstood.

Yes!!!!
And you don't have to go too far out to see ranches. There's plenty of wide open space and undeveloped land inside the city. Just a little south North Crowley High School, their are big houses with alot of land. There's a lot of development on the southwest side.

Dallas and Houston to be sure, but don't forget Hot Springs, Arkansas. It's a must see, sleepy village type place, but amazing mountain scenery, considering the surrounding areas. When I lived in Dallas, it was a great weekend getaway. And you can't miss Austin. They say it has more live music than any city in the u.s., but having lived in both places, I think Dallas has way more music, and better. You may see more music in Austin, but is it music anyone wants to see, or just some yahoo whose roommate manages a bar? lol.

I agree with posters about Roanoke, VA. Not too big, very appealing, surrounded by mountains, and definitely overlooked and underrated.

Ain't nobody got spirit of place like New Orleans. And Savannah is absolutely drenched in charm.
