Hey guys! I'm a US citizen who recently traveled to Prince Edward Island for a vacation. I loved it and thought it was so, so beautiful. I would move there if I could, but since jobs are few and far between on the island (especially for foreigners), I'm trying to find a place in the US that looks similar to PEI.
The weird thing is, from my (limited) experience traveling in the Northeastern US, I feel like the countryside looks a whole lot different. This doesn't really make sense, because Maine, for example, is so close to PEI. I'd assume they'd be the same geographically. Again, I really haven't traveled in the Northeast that much. Do you think I may be making up differences in my head perhaps?
Looking at the pictures of PEI that I've attached, do you all have any suggestions of places in the US that might look similar?
It looks like rural Northern Michigan to me. I'd assume many rural places in New England, New York State and the Upper Midwest would have a similar appearance. Are there any particular reasons you feel Maine is a whole lot different?
I dont' think the photos you posted show what PEI is really like. Show some of the red earth and pink and white sand beaches that go on forever. Roadways and green grass such as the photos you posted exist all over the U.S. and Canada.
I agree with others that it looks a lot like rural Michigan, though at least in these pictures it seems like that area has a lot of low bush trees and so your eye can see more of the landscape as opposed to areas in the northeast and upper midwest. Besides Michigan, your pictures resemble more of northern Minnesota.
I have seen other pictures of the island and it looks more like rural Pacific Northwest.
Been to PEI and agree that it is very unique. Closest I can think of in the US though is the Upper Peninsula of Michigan or along the Leelanau Peninsula.
I still have pix from a trip my family took to PEI when I was a kid - VERY long ago! It was beautiful. Is the soil there red because of iron? If so, it would be very much like the UP of Michigan, Northern Wisconsin (the Apostle Islands), and Northern MN - where I live. I think it may be more tree-y up here, though - I have memories of flatness and agriculture on PEI - is that correct? Are the trees on PEI mostly deciduous or coniferous? If coniferous then we've hit it right, but if deciduous then we have to do some more thinking.
Much of northern Maine looks similar as well, which makes senses geographically. Look around the towns of Houlton, Presque Isle and Caribou along the north end of I-95.
