I've been to both and I agree Austin is tamer than San Francisco but still more of a misfit than the vast majority of other American cities.
Despite the high cost of living and real estate, and the influx of techies, San Francisco is still number one. This may change one day, but it hasn’t lost its draw to the counter culture, yet. Los Angeles and New York have more than their share too, but they’re massive cities.

A friend of mine took a more scatological approach to explaining south Florida. He said that if the US was a toilet, then SF is the hole in the bottom. When you flush the toilet, that's where all the contents go.
