When people think of NYC they mainly think about the island of Manhattan. I never hear people including other NYC boroughs in their stereotyping of NYC besides Manhattan and just the Brooklyn Bridge.
Ellis Island is not part of NYC like people think it is. Ellis Island is technically New Jersey territory. Half of the island the Statue of Liberty sits on is part of NJ territory and the other half is on New York territory.
The outer boroughs have a lot of stereotypes, at least locally.
And nationally I think there's a stereotypical Brooklyn accent, which is silly though because that too is quite outdated. I wonder if outsiders expect New Yorkers to sound like Paulie Walnuts!
I'd say Mount Pleasant (open-air drug market) is the least accurate. It's wedged right in between the zoo and Columbia Heights and just north of Adams Morgan, and is one of the nicer neighborhoods in the city. I did encounter a panhandler once and forced me to give a couple bucks, but it's far from being dangerous. I'd also move the "Dead Runners" to the Anacostia Riverfront somewhere. Even the "Instant Death" section (Langdon) is rapidly gentrifying, and "Up and Coming" would describe the neighborhood better, and there's lots of amenities nearby. I'd also replace "Dense" with "Farmer's Market" (Eastern Market) and "Cigars" with "Dense" or "embassies".
Illegal Homelessness in Shepherd Park? (just south of Silver Spring, MD). I find "quiet" and "suburban" better descriptors. Brightwood is what Baltimore wishes it could be (it sort of reminds me a bit of the Belair Road corridor a bit, but when it was in better shape), as far NE and especially south of the Anacostia is the most Baltimore-like neighborhoods of the city. Of course, this is a little outdated since this was made during the Obama era, but it's reasonably accurate for the majority of neighborhoods.
I didn't see any for Minnesota, but I did notice the Northwoods of Wisconsin reads "Boring", but it should really read "Hunters and Cabins" or something to that effect. That area is anything, but boring.
North Portal Estates (that neighborhood at the northern tip of DC) is transient? I went there once and it didn't feel trendy in the slightest, and I read an article once about how many families have lived there for decades.
Also, I wish white DC-ites would at least try to hide the fact that they have never been east of the river. *eyeroll*
