In Wichita Ks (around 300K pop. ?), you need to take a spur to get to I-35
Well 70 and 15 have to intersect somewhere, right????? LOL! Isnt' there some big truck stop though, I assume there would be given both highways are so important.

Where Interstate 70 hits the Pennsylvania Turnpike there's a major town called Breezewood that grew up around serving the highway traffic.

By this definition, Northwest Arkansas (metro pop ca. 400,000) doesn't have any real interstates. It has I-540 that connects into I-40 about 50 miles south of Fayetteville, the southernmost town in the metro. I-540 ends a few miles south of the Missouri border.

I think that spurs should count legitimately as Interstates. Also, it should count as long is goes somewhere close to the city limits. Like Interstates 270 and 70 intersect at Frederick, MD, a city of 50,000 but the freeways don't actually go through downtown Frederick b/c of its historic nature, but the area where they intersect is filled with malls and hotels and shopping centers and office parks.

DC vs. Fresno....at least Fresno has freeways though they're not signed Interstates. DC has no freeway of any sort going completely through the city which is a major reason for the terrible traffic in this region. Baltimore has also seen freeway revolts which is why Interstate 70 doesn't intersect with 95 and 83 downtown, though Interstate 95 cuts right through, thankfully. Baltimore's traffic is MUCH better than DC's. Baltimore overall though has a good Interstate system with bypass routes on I-895 via the Harbor Tunnel along with a Beltway.

According to wikipedia, these state capitols don't have Interstate access.

- Pierre, South Dakota
- Juneau, Alaska (are there Interstates in Alaska and Hawaii at all??? Honolulu...Anchorage...Fairbanks????????)

- Carson City, Nevada
- Jefferson City, Missouri (though I doubt this is accurate b/c I think 70 does thru in between Kansas City and St. Louis...maybe b/c it doesn't enter the city limits?)

That may be true, but it is still not an Interstate per se. You still have to drive a while to hit an actual named Interstate which is odd for such a big metro. Strange how the entire Front Range is only served by I-25.

36 is a pretty big highway though.

It's kind of hard to run an interstate through the mtns.

This post topic is a little old so... if no has mentioned Lexington, KY (pop 280,000) through it in the mix. I-75/ I-64 run about 4 miles from Downtown

Front Range cities are NOT in the mountains. They are actually on the plains with the mountains to the immediate west.

I-70 passes through Columbia, about 30 miles north of Jefferson City, MO. So the article is correct.

Oh yeah Dover, Delaware is another state capital with no INterstate, in fact Interstate 95 is the only Interstate and it barely clips the northern portion of the state where Wilmington is. Interesting thing about Hawaii's interstates....if Alaska has no INterstates, Anchorage is a pretty big city. San Juan is technically an American city and it has no Interstates.

Key West, Florida is only served by US Highway 1, no Interstate at all thru the Florida Keys though they could co-sign US 1 as an Interstate in those parts. I do find is surprising that a city as big as Fresno has no Interstate connections, a lot of very small towns do.
