Lots of apples and oranges here. Many of these areas aren't metropolitan areas at all. They are *micropolitan* areas. Plus, Where is Lewisville, ME?

Fairbanks, Alaska? Come on. I was just there, a top ten most dangerous in the country is laughable.

Maybe due to Grizzly Bear attacks?

What's funny is that for all the media hype, Chicago is nowhere to be found on that list. "Per Capita" stats make a big difference.

In my opinion, the list is not accurate.

I find it hard to believe Hilton Head, South Carolina and Louisville is more dangerous than Detroit.

Surprised to see Fort Wayne mentioned with most dangerous metros.
I find it hard to believe Fort Wayne is more dangerous than Chicago, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Atlanta, Miami, Jackson, MS, Dallas and Houston, none of which made the top 25.

It stands to reason small metros would be among the safest. For example, Columbus, Indiana is a town of maybe 45,000, and maybe 70,000 metro has a very low poverty rate and average to above average income. Columbus should be among the most safest metro areas with it's demographics.

The 'safest' metros are all pretty small and lack a big urban center. They are also mostly below average in minority population. A number of them are college towns.

Big cities meanwhile are commonly known for having fairly safe suburban areas and crime-ridden inner city neighborhoods, so all of them will be to some degree dragged down by their ghettos and pulled up by their leafy suburbs.

As a result, the only big metros making an appearance are on the unsafe list and it's presumably those metros whose bad areas are notoriously bad or whose suburbs aren't big or wealthy enough in comparison to provide enough counterweight.

Perhaps the main interesting feature here is what I'd call 'problematic middle cities'. Few people talk about urban blight, crime and poverty in many mid-sized cities. The focus is always on the 'big names' like Chicago, Detroit or St.Louis. Don't hear too much about Monroe, Pine Bluff or Salinas and their significant problems. For the unfamiliar there's no real reason to think Salinas is worse than any other mid-sized city in California..but it is and I don't think too many people on here will choose it as a retirement community after asking around a bit.
