1) The most amazing mountains surround us on all four sides, and I get to enjoy the views of these mountains from every window in my house.
2) The small town community we have that looks out for each other, the neighbors that I know by first name, the freedom my kids have riding bikes down the street with their friends all summer long, the friendly waves as you walk down the road from friends and strangers alike.
3) The weather, and having four seasons is wonderful. I love our mild summers that don't get hotter than the eighties, the amazing autumn colors as the leaves change from green to yellows and reds, the crisp white snow and the cold sparkly mornings in the winter months, the poppies that appear every spring and all the baby animals that are born in and about the farms in my town.
Can you tell I love where we live? I could go on and on.
1) We pretty much butt up to the Cherokee National Forest. Other national forests are within an hour or so, as well as numerous state parks, lakes, and rivers.
2) Fairly diverse dining/drinking scene for a town of 65,000 or so. We have Indian, two Greek restaurants, an Iraqi restaurant, German, a Cuban place, two Pho places, etc.
3) The college and city government are beginning to work together to make the place a true "college town."
1. Wakability. Shorewood scores an 88 on the walkability scale. Numerous restaurants, schools, coffee shops, retail, a great beach on Lake Michigan, two different beer gardens, bike trails, and the grocery store are all less than a 10 min walk from my gorgeous neighborhood with 1920's custom mostly brick homes.
2. Great schools. High schoolers here actually like their school. Plus I love that my kids' elementary school is tucked safely in a residential neighborhood. No busy roads nearby.
3. Safety. Our kids are free to ride bikes around the neighborhood with little worry.
Bonus: Great location bordering Milwaukee's east side with a quick commute to downtown either by car, bike, or the bus that has a direct route from very close to our house.
1. I don't have to leave the city for anything.
2. I can get to everything without a car. I don't have to deal with all the traffic people complain about while accessing museums, parks, shopping, and nightlife.
3. All the trees and nature preserves in the city.
The good:
1. Very nice looking downtown, one of the best in Ohio.
2. Significant history and relatively isolated (surrounded by cornfields) allows the town to retain an independent identity.
3. Close proximity to Dayton, 30 minutes to downtown.
The bad:
1. Too many cookie cutter McMansion developments in the area destroying the scenery.
2. Traffic, litter, noise and crime are problems that will only get worse.
3. It’s not as good of a place for kids to grow up in like it was when I was growing up, kids can’t do the things I used to do and that’s just sad.
The moderate weather
The nearly year round outdoor opportunities, and the gorgeous natural views
The affordable COL
