Have you been to every city on the list to count the cranes and determine otherwise?
I live in NYC and I can clearly tell that the number is wrong for my city. Like, its not-even-close wrong.
Again, its impossible to track these things visually for NYC, unless you use government sources. For example, there are 280 miles of construction scaffolding in NYC city limits: https://ny.curbed.com/2017/5/2/15522...caffolding-map

Both pics are two blocks away from their respective city's convention center. Why does DTLA have an "abysmal block" two blocks over from the convention center, when two blocks away from DC's is a "prime street"? Hence exactly why I say the downtowns are in two different tiers.

not sure that a convention center is the barometer for anything, ever been to Chicago's - not sure that would be a best foot forward nor would Philly's or SF etc

It's not a barometer for anything, it's in Downtown! Across from the Staples Center.
Whenever someone states facts about DC it's boosting. But with other cities it's just normal.
Ironically that is "boosting". You just cherry picked a bad DTLA street view while picking a prime Downtown DC streetview.
This would be more of Apples to Apples comparison

To me the downtowns have completely different feels. I don't view them in a similar tier at all.
The difference is that downtown DC is an epicenter of American high culture, what with its iconic structures and complex of world-class museums.
