- The first ever radio station was founded here. It later became bigger and moved to San Francisco as KCBS because this place was a small town.
- The founder or Bank of America and Transamerica corporation was also from here, and similarly moved to SF to run his business because this place was mostly orchards at the time.
- The first guy to achieve manned, controlled, heavier-than-air flight died in his aircraft in what is now the Evergreen community here.

I guess those are all fitting precursors to "Silicon Valley."

Quite true. My daily bicycle commute route home includes the entire length of Olympiad Road, which passes Florence Griffith Joyner Memorial Olympic Park and also the start-finish line of the Men's and Women's Olympic Bicycle Road Race that is marked by a place and checkerboard black and white tiles across the road.

Bob Dylan was born in Duluth, MN and raised in HIbbing, MN. Dylan was inspired by Buddy Holly at a concert at the Duluth Armory.

Duluth is the largest and furthest inland port in the world and the largest port on the Great Lakes being over 2300 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and shipping over 40 million tons annually.

Oh yeah, Duluth also has the Geek Prom held in 2002. It has now moved to St. Paul.
