I believe Virginia and North Carolina are economically thriving just like the other Mid-Atlantic/Northeastern states with wealthy, diverse, and highly educated populations.
So Georgia and South Carolina aren't economically thriving, wealthy, diverse, and highly educated populations you say?
If look at US population density you can clearly see the disconect NC has with the Northeast, but at same time see overt pattern on Piedmont, even standing out from most of the South.

I think the error is South Carolina image, Most people would know that Georgia is a fast growing state because of Atlanta. But some people would separate GA with NC, cause a lot people don't realize or overlook that SC is a fast growing state. Especially in Lowcounty "Charleston", and the piedmont, Charlotte suburbs and The Upstate region "Greenville"
I think this will change when Greenville/Spartanburg MSA 895,923 hit a million, It's CSA The upserstate is already 1.4 million. Greenville is probably on the most under the radar fastest growing mid tier Metro area that will become a Major soon. I think people are familiar with fastest growing cities like Tucson, Omaha, Fresno but Not Greenville yet.
Mid-Atlantic in my opinion refers more to geography, since if one looks at a map North Carolina and Virginia are squarely in the middle of the Atlantic Coast between Maine and Florida. The term "Southern" is more cultural than geographic, and of course North Carolina fits there as well.
Va and NC 2 separate states so lumping them together saying they are in the middle don’t seem right. Va is in the middle
I believe Virginia and North Carolina are economically thriving just like the other Mid-Atlantic/Northeastern states with wealthy, diverse, and highly educated populations.
