I like smaller cities better than big cities for travelling. Big cities like LA are expensive, really hard to get around in... If you pack your days full, you can only sightsee and travel for about 4-7 days before your brain just gets full of experiences. You can only visit about 2 museums, so if a city has 30, it doesn't add tons IMO. Every decent sized city has more than enough things to do and sights to see if you actually dig in and do some research and have varied interests.
Outside Chicago (home) and the other places I've lived:
1. New Orleans
2. San Francisco
3. Providence
4. San Antonio (no, not just the riverwalk)
5. Madison, Wisconsin
I'm sure New York is worthy of making the list, but all the times I've been there, I haven't spent enough time there to feel like I got a good picture of the place.

This is the truth. Even in sprawling suburbs of big cities, I can usually find a few interesting things to do.
Outside of Chicago which I in part moved to because of my good experiences with my visits, and Los Angeles/OC where I am from, I would have to say the following, based on my travels through practically every major city in America:
Honolulu
Boston
New York
Miami
Washington D.C.
I also liked Portland, Philly and New Orleans as a visitor. One city that I do not like visiting in the summer is San Francisco; so cold, and dirty, and so under my expectations for a city so hyped. Most every other city at least meets my expectations of what they are perceived to be.

St. John's, Newfoundland
New York City
I never would have included LA on this list, I use to dislike it. Had been away for 10 years and went back riding the rails and ubering, not driving around it and I enjoyed it a million times better. I like the way LA is evolving.
