I don't know how those would be similar climates. Brittany is Oceanic while Maine is a solid humid continental climate. Brittany would be most similar to somewhere on the west coast; most likely western Washington or BC. BTW, for anyone interested there is a weather forum on here where we discuss this sort of thing all the time

east of the Cascades is very unlike the British Isles and even France...

away from the coast...California's Central Valley is oven hot and dry in summer.

Agreed - northern New England (even on the immediate coast) has absolutely brutal winters compared to any part of France outside the highest mountains. The Gulf Stream moderates temperatures to a huge extent in western Europe, compared to eastern North America on the other side of the Atlantic.

Could we argue that the outer portion of the Cape and Long Island would have similar temperatures?

Only if you cherry pick your examples carefully. Block Island and Strasbourg are probably the closest pairing you're going to get vis-a-vis New England and France. Even then, Block Island is wetter and not quite as mild as Strasbourg.

It's wetter only in the annual amount of precip. Strasbourg has more precip days and it's much cloudier than anywhere on the east coast of the US. The only place in the lower 48 with similar cloudiness/sunshine hours is coastal Washington but coastal Washington is much wetter. It's like when people say NYC gets more rain than Seattle. It's technically true that NYC averages more rain by amount but Seattle gets more days of rain. Rain in Seattle is mostly very light/drizzle that can go on for weeks. NYC gets much heavier rain events. NYC can get several inches in a day...it could take a week of rain in Seattle to get an equal amount.

British Isles has cooler summers. The most comparable place is the Pacific Northwest coastal areas.

Yea, I'd say so in terms of being within the bands of the Oceanic classification of the Koppen system though for Long Island it's just the very far eastern extremes of it on the south fork where the moderating influences of the Atlantic and the ocean in general are strongest.

The other two odd bits of that east of the Mississippi which are some of the southerly reaches of the Appalachians that also have the subtropical highland variation of that as well as a narrow strip along Lake Erie going from Lake County in Ohio through the tiny bit of Lake Erie waterfront in Pennsylvania and then through to the southernmost lakefront of Erie County, NY.

It's just barely visible, but parts of Penobscot Bay is under the same oceanic Koppen climate classification as Brittany is.
