This is a list of growth rates & numbers of the Black community by states. All states growth rate is in the positive. These are rough estimates , room for errors, and my source is the ACS, Black Demographics site, & the Census 2010 report.
California is surprising.
Thought it would be lower cause I have been hearing that the black population in LA had been shrinking. I guess the LA blacks and the out of state blacks must be moving to other parts of the state? The number still seems high. Higher than Georgia.
New York and Florida at second and third seems to be benefiting from foreign blacks.
Interesting that Maryland got more than Virginia.
Interesting that Ohio got twice as many as Illinois

I don't think that the Marlyand over Virginia is that surprising, Maryland has PGC which has a lot of middle to upper middle class neighborhoods that are mainly black.
The Whole LA thing is actually pretty interesting to me. Not sure where they are moving, because I too heard that LA's black population was shrinking.

I wouldn’t be surprised if NY and FL still get some internal migration as well. Some people may move away, but come back or in the case of FL, retirees likely come into play.

With L.A., many just move to the Inland Empire.

Ohio being twice as high as Illinois is hardly a shock. Cuyahoga County has by far the largest black population in the state and it is actually pretty stable. Cleveland is losing black population but the majority are going to other Cuyahoga suburbs. Overall, the county is only down about 7,000 since 2010. A good majority of that have simply moved to the northern Summit County burbs (all that have fairly high middle class black populations ... between 10 and 20 percent) and are now being counted toward Akron, which has shown about the same increase that Cleveland has "lost."
Then Columbus' black population, either through international migration (Somalia) ior domestic, is booming. Cincinnati is also seeing quite a bit of growth.
In Illinois, the black population is centered around Chicago, which is widely known to be losing black population at a fairly significant rate.
It's interesting that Minnesota has a higher black population than Wisconsin. Just surprised by that. Also, surprised to learn that 80k of them are Somalis. I had no idea the number was that high.
