Depends what you value. If you value diversity, different career opportunities, cultural amenities, and being around a lot of people then it's worth it.

If you are someone who strictly values solitary living, the outdoors, and quiet isolation, then no a city is probably not for you.

Ask yourself what is that you are hoping that city can accomplish for you in your life?

As long as you can afford living there absolutely. One year isn't that long in the grand scheme of things, but much, much longer than most Americans get to live in NYC. You will know if the city - or any city, for that matter - is right or wrong for you.

Do not take the job and commute from somewhere else in the NYC metro though. It's most of the cost, a lot of added hassle, and few of the positives.

Go with an open mind and give it some time. It is expensive so you need to consider that. People will not seem as friendly as in a more rural place but if you make friends it should be okay. Getting around will be a challenge until you get the hang of it. If you only are there for a year you should make an effort to see as much as you can even if you don't like it.

For only one year? Sure, why not. You've thought about living in a city, so this is a no-strings-attached way of checking out one of the best cities in the world. You'll want to be frugal, understandably, but you may never have another chance to have that kind of lifestyle, with so much culture around, again in your lifetime. If it's only for a year, you can return to a more rural way of life after that, if you wish, and that'll be fine.

Don't know how old you are . . . but living in NYC is what everyone should do during their misspent youth.

If nothing else, you'll learn about yourself and have great stories to tell afterwards!

Seems like an exciting opportunity to live in the city for a year. Make the most of it and experience as much as you can during that time.

Maybe you’ll love it and want to stay or move to another large city. Maybe you won’t love it, but will have appreciated having the experience.

Is city living worth it?
Big city living would not be worth it to me.

A year is a very short time period. Definitely worth it. If you don’t gain something trying something new for a year, you have nobody to blame but yourself.

It's all personal taste really. I could never imagine myself living anywhere smaller or less active than right in the thick of it in Chicago.
